Cabling was outdated and disorganized, the business was running on a shared broadband connection with fluctuating speeds, and employees were struggling with slow connections and an unreliable VoIP system — friction that was starting to show up in client relationships too.  

It's a scenario a lot of growing contractors will recognize: the infrastructure that was adequate for a ten-person office starts breaking down once the headcount and client list both double.

The existing cabling wasn't just outdated; it had degraded to the point that it was actively limiting performance, and the shared broadband connection gave the company no guarantee of the speed or reliability a growing client base required.

The fix combined an internal cabling overhaul with a dedicated leased-line internet circuit carrying a guaranteed service level, along with documentation to help the company's internal IT staff maintain the new setup going forward.  

The results were dramatic: internet upload and download speeds jumped to a consistent 1Gb per second, a 5,000% increase, employee productivity rose by 30%, and the company recorded zero infrastructure faults the following year.  

It's a clear illustration of a pattern common to growing construction firms — the network that worked fine at a smaller scale becomes the bottleneck once the business scales past it, and the fix isn't more troubleshooting; it's infrastructure built for where the company is headed rather than where it started.

Collins Construction Services: Closing the Security Gap

Collins Construction Services, based in Savannah, Georgia, was dealing with a mix of issues that will sound familiar to a lot of construction back offices.  

Estimators who couldn't reliably access files remotely, OneDrive syncing slowly enough to disrupt work, daily workstation reboots, recurring printer connectivity problems, and a phishing attempt that had already led to a financial fraud incident.

Working with KML Computer Services, Collins Construction implemented layered cybersecurity built around a next-generation firewall, cloud-based security management, and secure VPN access for remote staff.  

The company also moved to managed backup and disaster recovery with NAS-based protection, replaced an aging phone system with a Microsoft Teams-integrated VoIP solution, and handed Microsoft 365 administration over to KML for tighter security controls and user management.

Alongside the technical work, KML put a structured technology roadmap in place, covering device inventory, lifecycle planning, and budget forecasting for future upgrades — the kind of forward planning that's easy to skip when a company is focused on winning and delivering projects.

The combination gave estimators secure remote access without workarounds, cut down on the recurring disruptions that had been eating into staff time, and gave ownership a clearer sense of what technology investment actually looked like going forward.

The technology itself, across all three stories, wasn't exotic. Consolidated vendor management, better cabling and a dedicated circuit, layered cybersecurity, and a modern phone system are not cutting-edge upgrades.  

What actually changed the outcome was treating IT as infrastructure worth planning for, instead of a background utility that only gets attention once it breaks.

Construction companies weighing their own technology setup against the business built on top of it will likely recognize themselves in at least one of these stories. The problems rarely resolve on their own, and the companies that finally address them tend to wonder why they waited as long as they did.
